Desktop Coopetition

Speaker: John Cherry

After "Looking Ourselves in the Eye", the second keynote will take a look at the desktop Linux markets. OSDL is comprised of chip vendors, platform providers, system integrators, Linux distributions, system management providers, and application vendors. Their perspectives on which markets are hot and what is needed on the Linux desktop to accelerate growth in these markets should be of great interest to the KDE developers as they evaluate their core values and cultural identities. There is no turning back for companies providing open source solutions on open source operating systems. The economics are clear and the freedoms are compelling. A strange co-dependency is developing between commercial entities and open source communities. How do these communities work together and maintain the spirit of innovation, freedom, and fun?

[John Cherry]

John Cherry is the Desktop Linux (DTL) initiative manager at OSDL. For the past year, John has been working through the DTL initiative to develop the concept of a Desktop Community, which has been very rewarding with a diversity of chip vendors, equipment vendors, Linux distributors, middleware vendors, application vendors, and geographies. John has been in the computer industry for over 25 years with companies like Floating Point Systems, Sequent Computer Systems, IBM, and OSDL.
