GGZ Gaming Zone: Progress of the cross-desktop gaming platform

Speaker: Josef Spillner

Following up on aKademy 2005's presentation of GGZ integration into KDE, there is a lot of news which should be taken into account. MSN's restructuring in June 2006 made many existing player clubs switch to GGZ (through the Java applet) so that we now have a stable existing player community (http://games.ggzcommunity.org/, temporary site).

The usage of GGZ in the upcoming GNOME 2.17 series will further establish GGZ as the standard platform for online games on Linux desktops. KDE support is currently not well maintained but for KDE 4 the goal should be to make use of GGZ services with KDE-style APIs and little effort on the game maintainer sides.

Josef Spillner

Josef is spearheading efforts to unify online gaming across all desktops. He has worked on project GGZ since the year 2000 and created many games, but is really more of an infrastructure meister and is glad that many other contributors care about the players and their needs.

Directly after aKademy, he'll meet up with fellow GGZ developers in London so fresh ideas can immediately be put up for discussion there.
